Teenager wins court battle for right to have COVID vaccine so that he can visit his dying grandmother

Published on

A judge ruled that the jab would mitigate his chances of infecting his dying grandmother, who has advanced lung cancer.

COVID jabs have been approved for Dutch children aged 12 to 17, but children under the age of 17 require the consent of both parents.

In this case, the boy’s father raised objection.

Vaccination scepticism is on the rise in the country.

Judge Bart Tromp of Groningen District Court stated that the boy’s interests were more important than the father’s concerns and that he should be vaccinated as soon as possible.

According to court documents, the boy wanted to spend as much time as he could with his grandmother, who has metastatic lung cancer and is “in the final stages of her life.”

Judge Tromp rejected the boy’s father’s arguments that vaccines were “in the testing phase” and posed risks to reproductive organs, saying they lacked scientific support.

He also mentioned the possibility that, while children were less likely to become seriously ill from the virus, they could develop long Covid.

The risk of infecting others was also lower, he said.

The boy’s mother has backed him up in court. The couple is no longer married.

According to Dutch law, if the parents cannot agree, a judge must rule in the best interests of the child.
