“People don’t even look you in the eye anymore” – says bartender after weight gain during lockdown

Published on

A video of a bartender who honestly revealed how gaining weight changed people’s behavior towards her has gone viral online.

Cassidy Lane, with the name @body_positive_bartender on TikTok, posted a video replying to another user’s call to “stitch” with their video if they had had “pretty privilege”.

In her video, she states she boldly overcame an eating disorder which resulted in her gaining weight after the pandemic.

And, shockingly, the way she looks has had a negative impact on how people view her at work – both in attitudes and tips.

People don’t even look you in the eye anymore

the TikToker says, with tears rolling down her face.

They’re not nice to you, especially men.

Before gaining weight, Cassidy says she would engage in a friendly conversation with male punters at her bar.

But now, when she starts talking to them all she gets back is “two Coors Light and a Bud Light”.

For people saying that doesn’t actually happen, please raise your hand if you would willingly like to live your life as a fat person

she continues.

And the fact no one raises their hand makes the point and it just makes you feel hopeless – am I ever going to be worth more than my looks?

Cassidy’s video has been seen more than 4.5 million times and thousands of people flocked to the comments section saying they have experienced similar attitudes after gaining weight.

As someone who has been fat my whole life this actually kind of makes me feel better because it means that it’s not really a ‘me’ problem, I have to talk

one wrote.

Another commented:

And skinny girls wonder why we need the body positivity movement. We aren’t treated as humans because of our weight.

A third said:

I’ve gained and lost weight so many times due to my eating disorder and people always treat me better when I was smaller.

While a fourth added the video made her cry, saying:

I used to be *that* girl until I had PCOS in uni and gained a lot of weight. Now I’m gaining even more and I’m scared for my health.
