Officials said Philadelphia is suspending its citywide indoor mask ban just days after becoming the first major U.S. city to reimpose it.

The city’s Board of Health decided to repeal the rule on Thursday evening, citing improvements in local Covid-19 statistics.

In an email, a representative for Mayor Jim Kenney said, “Due to decreasing hospitalizations and a leveling of case counts, the City will move to strongly recommending masks in indoor public spaces as opposed to a mask mandate.” He stated that more information would be released on Friday.

The vote by the health board comes after a federal judge in Florida ruled on Monday that the Biden administration’s Covid-19 mask mandate for public transit was unconstitutional. The Department of Justice has stated that it will appeal the verdict.

Following the verdict, the Transportation Security Administration said that it would no longer enforce mask mandates on domestic flights, as did major U.S. carriers. Some public transportation organizations, such as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City, removed their mask mandates, while others, such as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City, left them in place.

The city of Philadelphia’s reimposed mask requirement went into effect on Monday, a week after officials announced it would be reinstated. At the time, Philadelphia Health Commissioner Cheryl Bettigole stated that requiring masks once more will allow the city to stay ahead of the escalating number of Covid-19 cases caused by the Omicron BA.2 strain.

As the first Omicron wave faded away, the city’s health agency withdrew its mandate for schools and dropped other measures. In March, the agency lowered mask requirements for public facilities, and in February, it stopped enforcing a vaccine requirement for indoor meals.
