Individuals with inflammatory skin disorders should avoid using skincare products that contain food items like goat’s milk, according to new research published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy.

According to new research, using skincare products that contain food, such as goat’s milk, could put you at risk of developing an allergy.

Seven patients with inflammatory skin disorders developed anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) after consuming goat’s or sheep’s milk or cheese products, according to the study.

All of the patients had a history of using goat’s milk skin products to treat their inflammatory skin conditions prior to the onset of their allergic reaction.

The team looked at the cases of seven patients with inflammatory skin conditions who experienced anaphylaxis after eating goat’s or sheep’s milk or cheese products.

All the patients had previously been using goat’s milk skincare products, which are frequently marketed as treatments for inflammatory skin conditions.

The researchers say these cases add to increasing evidence that using food-based products to treat these conditions could lead to the development of new food allergies.

“Marketing of skin products derived from goat’s milk is extensive and targeted to patients with ‘sensitive skin’ who commonly have underlying inflammatory skin conditions,” the authors said.

According to the study’s authors, these “findings provide novel evidence of the origins of adult-onset milk allergy and add to the growing body of evidence that use of foodstuffs as therapy for inflammatory skin conditions can lead to the development of new food allergies.”
