Veganuary: Expert reveals the dangers of Veganism

Veganuary is a month-long campaign in which individuals are encouraged to eat a vegan diet for 31 days.

A growing number of Americans and Britons are going vegan because they care about the environment, animal welfare, or their own health.

Veganuary, a well-known campaign in the United Kingdom, has gained in popularity in recent years, with thousands of people in the United States and the United Kingdom taking up the challenge of abstaining from meat and dairy for an entire month.

A Veganuary diet, which is followed for the entire month of January, excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs, and instead emphasizes the consumption of plant-based meals.

Many studies have proved that a regular plant-based diet lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and improves overall health.

But, a prominent expert from King’s College London warns that following the Veganuary movement may be unhealthy.

This is due to the fact that people who go vegan for a month are more likely to binge on meat-free junk food than they are to experiment with new fruits and vegetables.

When it comes to committing to a plant-based diet, they’ll have done too little homework, according to Tim Spector, a genetic epidemiology professor at King’s College London.

As a result, many people will consume meals that are high in sodium, fat, additives, and sugar. With dairy in many of their favorite foods, vegan burgers and pizzas are frequently the only options for eating out — while vegan sausage buns are a quick snack.

“There are plenty of very unhealthy vegans, who swap meat and dairy for poor choices of food, and that is a real risk for Veganuary,” Professor Spector said.

“My concern is that many people will end up eating a less diverse diet including just a few unhealthy vegan meals on repeat, rather than getting recipe books, trying new fruits and vegetables and, if in doubt, making soup.”

Many people who go vegan feel healthier, according to Professor Spector, but this could be due to a ‘placebo’ effect, in which they convince themselves that it is healthy for them.

Professor Spector added: “The general principle of Veganuary is good, but some people might do better by trying to go meat-free first.

‘It is important to plan in order to be able to do it properly.’
