Former NATO Secretary-General Finds A New Role In Ukraine

Anders Fogh Rasmussen started his own political consulting firm after serving as NATO Secretary-General, and he has advised several politicians, including the former president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former Danish Prime Minister and NATO Secretary-General has taken on the job of a key adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In his new role, he toured the Ukrainian city of Irpen before joining Zelensky in Kyiv as a member of an international group that will advise the Ukrainian leader on “security guarantees” for his country.

Several worldwide specialists from global politics, foreign policy, diplomacy, and academia from various political perspectives make up the committee that Fogh Rasmussen presently co-chairs. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd are among the other members.

Fogh Rasmussen noted that meeting Zelensky was an “honor” and that his delegation had discussed “what more the democratic world must support Ukraine” in a tweet.

As stated by Anders Fogh Rasmussen to TV2, “The group’s task is to look at how we can give Ukraine sufficient security guarantees in the time until they may in the future become members of NATO.”

“Ukraine still has that ambition, but our task is to discuss what we can do here and now to secure Ukraine” he continued.

The working group stated in a press release related to Rasmussen’s new mission that it would investigate how Ukraine’s allies might “strengthen and rebuild Ukraine’s armed forces” to “avoid future aggression.”

Anders Fogh Rasmussen emphasized that none of the pledges made by other nations could “replace Ukraine’s own, strong defense capabilities.”

In 2009, Anders Fogh Rasmussen resigned as prime minister of Denmark to take the position of secretary-general of NATO. With a dubious record that includes the extensive bombing campaign of Libya in 2011 that sparked the nation’s continuing civil war, he resigned from his position in 2014 and has since worked as a political consultant at Rasmussen Global.

This is not the first time Fogh Rasmussen has helped the president of Ukraine. In 2016, President Petro Poroshenko hired Fogh as an advisor.

Fogh Rasmussen also said that not giving Georgia and Ukraine a clear path to joining NATO was a “mistake” on the part of the West. Rasmussen argued that the West “cannot let Russia win” in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
