This little boy, who lives in the rural commune of Tamrout, in the vicinity of Bab Berred, near Chefchaouen, accidentally fell into this well from a depth of 32 meters.

Dozens of civil protection employees are working day and night in the town of Igrán, in the northern province of Chauen, to rescue Rayan, a five-year-old boy who fell into a 32-meter-deep well last Tuesday, around at two in the afternoon.

The operators are trying to open a parallel tunnel with five excavating machines that have already managed to drill to a depth of 19 meters, according to the official MAP agency in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A local caving association has tried unsuccessfully to access the boy. The authorities and the neighbors have spent two nights around the well fighting against the clock to rescue him. While the machines advance in the excavation of the tunnel parallel to the boy, he has been sent through the same well into which sugar water, food and an oxygen mask have fallen.

The boy’s father spoke to the digital site Le360 last Wednesday, when the boy had been trapped for 25 hours: “It’s my well, I was repairing it and Rayan was by my side. At one point, he fell and I didn’t notice. We alerted the authorities and all the neighbors have come to support us. Everyone has done their best for him to come out alive and for me to be able to hold him in my arms tonight. But I hide from them that both his mother and I are devastated and very nervous.”

This Thursday, at seven in the morning, the excavation work was interrupted to open another tunnel on the other side of the well.

A medical team from the Chefchaouen provincial hospital, with resuscitators and anesthesiologists, was waiting by the dig. The gendarmerie had also stationed a helicopter. And the authorities had asked the neighbors to clear the area and let the professionals work.

At two in the afternoon the boy was still trapped. But there were only thirty feet left to reach him.
