Mudslide caused by heavy rains leaves 7 dead, 29 injured in Colombia

A mudslide triggered by torrential rains in central-western Colombia killed at least seven people and injured 29 others on Tuesday, according to the national disaster agency.

Early morning rains in Risaralda province prompted a landslide that buried many residences in the municipality of Dosquebradas.

“For now… there are reports of 29 people injured and unfortunately seven deaths,” twitted the state National Unit for the Management of Risks and Disasters.

According to the Unity, rescue personnel are still searching for survivors in the muck.

The mudslide formed a break in the lush green vegetation, which was photographed by the Unit.

It did not specify the number of residences affected.

New mudslides, according to rescuers, could result in the damming of the nearby Otun river, worsening the calamity.

“We are currently managing the entire evacuation perimeter because we still detect soil instability,” Alvaro Arias, government secretary in Risaralda, told Blu Radio.
