Spotify joins calls against Joe Rogan without hurting its business

Following allegations that the US broadcaster has helped spreading Covid misinformation, musicians such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell demanded their music be withdrawn off the site.

It comes as Spotify forecasts slower subscriber growth for the current quarter.

In after-hours trade, the streaming company’s stock dropped by more than 10%.

“Usually when we’ve had controversies in the past, those are measured in months, not days,” said Spotify’s chief executive Daniel Ek.

“We don’t change our policies based on one creator, nor do we change based on any media cycle or calls from anyone else.”

Revenue in the final three months of 2021 increased to $3 billion, substantially exceeding market estimates.

However, the company fell short of analysts’ expectations, forecasting 183 million paying customers this quarter.

Spotify said that the outlook was “subject to substantial uncertainty” as a result of the pandemic.

Spotify announced this week that it is trying to add cautionary warnings to any podcasts that reference Covid-19.

The business recently published public regulations that give it the authority to ban or suspend users and podcasts who spread dangerous lies.

These are similar to those used by Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, among other social media networks.

The warning, according to Mr Ek, will connect listeners to a resource centre with facts, expert information, and “links to trusted sources.”

“This new effort to combat misinformation will roll out to countries around the world in the coming days,” he said.

“To our knowledge, this content advisory is the first of its kind by a major podcast platform.”

Mr. Rogan also promised to work harder on his podcast to provide more fair perspectives.

In a nearly 10-minute Instagram video posted on Monday, he stated that he will “try harder to get people with differing opinions” on his show.

The statements came after many artists and podcasters requested that their work be removed from Spotify.

Neil Young and Joni Mitchell’s music was taken down from the streaming platform last week.

They were followed by soul artist India Arie and British singer-songwriter Graham Nash, with India Arie citing Mr Rogan’s “language around race” as a factor in her decision.

Mary Trump, former US President Donald Trump’s niece, has announced she had also removed her podcast from Spotify.

“I know it’s not a big deal but hope it will be part of a growing avalanche,” she twitted.
